Tim DeChristopher, a very influential speaker of the climate change movement, has continuously made the point that movements, in order to gain power, impact, and momentum, require song. He uses the Civil Rights Movement as an example, citing the fact that during this movement the protesters used song to join together and share a common bond. He also makes the point that song throws off the movement's opposition - for exacmple, if 1000 people show up and start singing Lean On Me, the other side will be caught off guard and be more hesitant to react negatively.
I propose that the demonstrators on Wall Street join together as one unified voice and sing songs of solidarity and meaning to gain support for their occupation. I recommend showing this video to the demonstrators - if possible, connect a computer to speakers so that the entire group can hear it at once: youtu.be/PY4JbVVzebg (I recommend everyone watch this video, not only the protesters)
This video contains Tim's reasons for challenging the society we live in in an extremely powerful and emotional way through spoken word poetry. When he is finished speaking, through tears the entire conference at which he is speaking sing a song in solidarity with everyone sharing their sentiments. The power of this is immeasurable and irrefutable.
I am proposing that this video be heard by the protesters and that they join in song with the video at the end. The emotion and passion that will stem from this could potentially spread like wildfire. Music has a way of piercing the human soul unlike anything else in our human experience, and utilizing it as a tool for us to spread our message can only improve our chances of being heard.
"This is not going away. At this point of unimaginable threats on the horizon, this is what hope looks like. In these times of a morally bankrupt government that has sold out its principles, this is what patriotism looks like. With countless lives on the line, this is what love looks like, and it will only grow." -Tim DeChristopher
